The median income comparison (§ 707(b)(7)) is part of the Chapter 7 means-test framework. Official Form 122A-1 defines and calculates current monthly income using the six full calendar months before filing, with specified inclusions and exclusions. The calculated amount is annualized and compared with this table.
At or below the published figure: the comparison is one part of the statutory analysis. Other facts and court requirements can still matter.
Above the published figure: additional means-test calculations and exceptions may apply. The table alone does not determine whether someone can or should file under a particular chapter.
These figures update periodically. The U.S. Trustee Program publishes revised tables when Census Bureau data is updated. The current source is the current UST table for the filing date being researched.
