After a Workplace Injury: General Process and Records

General information about emergency care, employer notice, claim forms, authorized treatment, records, work restrictions, and state agencies.

Workers' compensation systems are state-specific. Medical emergencies, employer notice, formal claim filing, treatment authorization, wage benefits, and appeal procedure may each use different rules and deadlines.

Emergency medical care is distinct from later workers' compensation authorization. State law and the employer's program may identify approved providers, change-of-physician procedures, and payment rules.

Records commonly relevant to the process include incident reports, claim forms, medical notes, work-status restrictions, wage records, correspondence, and agency notices. A doctor's work-status document and an employer's accommodation or return-to-work process can affect benefit administration.

Employer awareness is not always legally equivalent to the notice or claim required by state law. The written notice, state agency materials, and current forms identify the applicable procedure.
