Finding Qualified Immigration Legal Help

How to verify immigration attorneys and DOJ-accredited representatives, compare written fee terms, and use trusted public directories.

Immigration matters can be handled by licensed attorneys and, within their authorized scope, DOJ-accredited representatives working through recognized organizations. Notaries, document preparers, and immigration consultants do not become authorized to give legal advice merely by registering a business or offering form services.

Verify Authority and Identity

An attorney's license and public discipline history can be checked through the licensing state's official bar directory. EOIR also publishes discipline information for practitioners appearing before immigration courts and the Board of Immigration Appeals.

DOJ maintains rosters of recognized organizations and accredited representatives. Partial accreditation covers representation before DHS; full accreditation can also cover EOIR proceedings within the representative's authorization.

Compare the Scope of Work

A consultation can clarify:

  • who will be responsible for the matter;
  • which forms, proceedings, or agency responses are included;
  • whether court appearances or appeals are outside the engagement;
  • how updates and document requests will be communicated;
  • the fee structure, government filing fees, and other expenses; and
  • how withdrawal, refunds, or additional work are addressed.

Fees vary substantially by location, complexity, urgency, and scope. Fixed price ranges become stale quickly and can obscure what an engagement actually includes. A written agreement is a better comparison tool.

Fraud and Misrepresentation Warnings

USCIS and the Federal Trade Commission warn about notario fraud, guaranteed outcomes, false government connections, demands to sign blank forms, and advice to provide false information. A U.S. notary public is not a lawyer by virtue of being a notary.

No representative can guarantee that an agency or court will approve a filing. Government filing fees and premium-processing options are published by the relevant agency.

Trusted Directories

DocketBuddy does not select a lawyer, share submitted contact information with attorneys, or receive a fee based on a client or case outcome.
