SSDI Stages and Published Processing Times
A general overview of SSDI application, reconsideration, hearing, decision, and benefit-processing stages.
SSDI timing varies by state agency, hearing office, evidence development, claim complexity, and review stage. A public average cannot predict an individual decision date.
Common Stages
An application may move through initial review, reconsideration where available, an ALJ hearing, Appeals Council review, and federal court. A favorable decision may be followed by separate award and payment processing.
Medical-record requests, consultative examinations, hearing-office backlogs, remands, and other case events can change the timeline.
Expedited Categories
SSA has priority procedures for certain terminal illnesses, Compassionate Allowances, and other categories. Whether a claim receives expedited handling is determined by SSA under its current rules.
Past-Due Benefits
Any past-due benefit calculation depends on the benefit type, established onset date, application date, waiting-period rules, and offsets. The award notice explains the agency's calculation.
